It is another corn harvesting season in Pailin, a province in northwestern Cambodia, and farmers are busy harvesting and packing the produce for buyers. But land degradation and deforestation, a side effect of increased farming activity, has become a major environmental issue.

Sunil has an enviable job. He spends his days on the beach in Koskoda, a coastal village near Colombo. He earns his living by patrolling the beach to make sure turtle nests are safe. In the past, he patrolled the beach as a poacher. He stole turtle eggs and sold them to make some quick cash. Now Sunil feels better about his new job. He says the business is not very profitable â he makes 8,000-10,000 Rp per month - but at least, it represents a steady revenue.

Chao Lao Bay was once regarded as an untouched jewel nestled on the Eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand. But, like many coastlines in Thailand, the past two decades has seen the continued devestation. With the efforts of the community, the local government has passed a law ensuring coastal conservation activities. UNDP is helping participants to promote the project throughout Thailand as a successful example that bears repeating and similar projects have already begun elsewhere.

On January 12th 2010 a massive earthquake struck Haiti.rMillions of lives were affected and a country was left in ruins.rUNDP's cash for work program is putting thousands of Haitians back to work, helping restart life in their own communities.

In preparation to the Copenhagen climate change conference, UNDP produced a film about the reality of climate change in the Pacific island of Kiribati. The film clearly shows how people’s lives are being affected right now by rising sea waters.

With the climate change conference about in Copenhagen, Brazil is dealing with another climate change issues often ignored – CFC gasses. In the past the gasses where thought to only harm the ozone but scientists believe that the gasses are much more harmful to the atmosphere then CO2. Now UNDP is helping the Brazilian government in the safe extraction and destruction of the CFC gases

UNDP Kenya Hydro Power Communities in the Kenyan highlands are taking advantage of an abundance of water for electricity. UNDP¿s Global Environment Facility is helping to create micro hydro power plants for villages across the mountainous region.
